The past, present and future of bovine pluripotent stem cells: a brief overview

Xiuchun TIAN

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 3-7 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2018247

Abstract:

Although the pursuit of bovine embryonic stem cells started more than 26 years ago for the purpose of gene-targeting, true pluripotent stem cells in this economically important species are still elusive. With the rapid advances in genome-editing and cloning using homologously recombined somatic cells, the need for pluripotent stem cells for precise genetic modification in any species became questionable. With the pig being the better model for human regenerative biology, the identification of the commonalities and uniqueness of the pluripotency circuitry across mammalian species may be the main objective for studying pluripotent stem cells in the bovine.

Present Situation and Future Prospects of Child Restraint Systems for Vehicles

Fang Yuan,Wu Guangqiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 8,   Pages 81-85

Abstract:

Child restraint system(CRS)is a new study field in the world. Especially in China, the CRS research is particularly meaningful with the rapid growth of the number of child passengers. The amendment and optimization on the regulations of CRS are brought out based on the distinction between CRS and occupant safety systems. The application of advanced design theory, the technology of computer simulation and the systematical analysis strategy will bring a new prospect for the development of CRS.

Renewable power for China: Past, present, and future

Eric MARTINOT

Frontiers in Energy 2010, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 287-294 doi: 10.1007/s11708-010-0120-z

Abstract: This paper briefly examines the history, status, policy situation, development issues, and prospects for key renewable power technologies in China. The country has become a global leader in wind turbine and solar photovoltaic (PV) production, and leads the world in total power capacity from renewable energy. Policy frameworks have matured and evolved since the landmark 2005 Renewable Energy Law, updated in 2009. China’s 2020 renewable energy target is similar to that of the EU. However, China continues to face many challenges in technology development, grid-integration, and policy frameworks. These include training, research and development, wind turbine operating experience and performance, transmission constraints, grid interconnection time lags, resource assessments, power grid integration on large scales, and continued policy development and adjustment. Wind and solar PV targets for 2020 will likely be satisfied early, although domestic demand for solar PV remains weak and the pathways toward incorporating distributed and building-integrated solar PV are uncertain. Prospects for biomass power are limited by resource constraints. Other technologies such as concentrating solar thermal power, ocean energy, and electricity storage require greater attention.

IV) solvent extraction enhancement in high acidity using di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid with [Cl] present

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 1,   Pages 56-67 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2185-8

Abstract: Separation of vanadium from black shale leaching solution at low pH is very meaningful, which can effectively avoid the generation of alkali neutralization slag and the resulting vanadium loss. In this study, coordination mechanism of vanadium in acid leaching solution at low pH was investigated with the intervention of chloride ions. Under the conditions of pH 0.8, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid concentration of 20%, phase ratio of 1:2, and extraction time of 8 min, the vanadium extraction could reach 80.00%. The Fourier transform infrared and electrospray ionization results reveal that, despite the fact that the chloride ion in the leachate could significantly promote vanadium extraction, the chloride ion does not enter the organic phase, indicating an intriguing phenomenon. Among Cl–V, SO42−–V, and H2O–V, the V–Cl bond is longer and the potential difference between coordinate ions and vanadium is smaller. Therefore, VO2+ gets easily desorbed with chloride ions and enter the organic phase. At the same time, the hydrogen ions of di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid also enter the water phase more easily, which reduces the pH required for the extraction reaction.

SESAR: The Past, Present, and Future of European Air Traffic Management Research Perspective

Tatjana Bolić, Paul Ravenhill

Engineering 2021, Volume 7, Issue 4,   Pages 448-451 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2020.08.023

Abstract:

The Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) project is the technological pillar of the European Commission’s Single European Sky Initiative to modernize air traffic management (ATM). Here, we describe the process of establishing SESAR and the main parts of the project: the research and development (R&D) part, which is led by the SESAR Joint Undertaking; the deployment part, which is managed by the SESAR Deployment Manager; and the European ATM Master Plan, which collects and lays out both the R&D and deployment needs. The latest European ATM Master Plan was adopted just prior to the current pandemic. The huge loss in air traffic due to the pandemic, and the speed of the recovery of the aviation industry will require reprioritization, but the main elements that have been established—particularly those in support of the environment—remain valid.

Major bridge development in Hong Kong, China—past, present and future

Michael CH HUI, Doris YAU

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 405-414 doi: 10.1007/s11709-011-0136-4

Abstract: The first “modern” type of vehicular bridge was built in Hong Kong China in the 1920s. The need for an efficient transportation system to cope with population growth and enable economic development has demanded the construction of more and more bridges since the middle of the 20th century. By 2007, Hong Kong had a total of about 1300 vehicular bridges. Four of these bridges, including the Tsing Ma Bridge, Kap Shui Mun Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge, and the cable-stayed bridge on the Hong Kong- Shenzhen Western Corridor, are considered to be major bridges supported by cables. Currently, the Stonecutters Bridge on Route No. 8 is under construction and is expected to be completed in late 2009. At the same time, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will be in its detailed design stage soon. While efforts have been made by bridge builders to construct these giant structures, the upkeeping of these valuable assets at a high standard and ensuring their continuous functioning and performance during their intended lifespans will be another important task for bridge engineers. Wind and structural health monitoring system (WASHMS) will play a key role in this respect.
